When we talk about materials, we imagine handmade things designed to entertain and teach students, but it is much more than that. Teaching materials can also be used in learning support or in another area, but this article will focus on learning support.

Teaching materials are defined as a resource (either physical or technological) that allows students to interact with the material and acquire knowledge or skills thanks to the teaching and activities proposed by a teacher or professional.

In learning support, they serve the purpose of developing and helping students understand the main idea and skills. They have multiple benefits, such as facilitating understanding and teaching, increasing motivation, developing teamwork, independence and confidence in learning, developing creativity, critical and logical thinking, stimulating the senses and skills, promoting diversity, generating longer periods of concentration, gaining experience, etc.

Teaching materials are not only based on manipulable materials; they can also be multimedia presentations, which can be videos with questions and answers, textbooks, such as 2D and 3D materials, educational games, etc.

They can be part of a methodology, techniques, or strategies, depending on each professional’s purpose.

In conclusion, teaching materials can be used in different ways depending on the objective the learning support specialist seeks to achieve. In addition, the professional must monitor the materials together with the methodology or technique to determine whether to continue or make changes.
