Lost Generation

Common sense suggests that generative artificial intelligence should be used as a resource to save time when searching for information, streamline the problem-solving process, and improve students’ performance and proficiency at school. Reality, however, tells a different story.
In recent years, generative artificial intelligence has been used as a way to normalize the practice of doing things with the least possible effort rather than achieving success through hard work. In other words, instead of using it to develop a deeper understanding of the topics they study, students use it to complete their school assignments for them. This situation, which has also reached the professional world, is concerning because of its potential long-term consequences.
What kind of students are families and the educational system nurturing? Are we on the verge of losing a large part of our younger generation to ignorance because of generative artificial intelligence?
Education is not only about teaching content but also about instilling critical thinking and soft skills. Nonetheless, reality presents a more troubling scenario. If students overrely on generative artificial intelligence to do their work for them, will they be able to pass a university entrance exam or a job interview?
What if students’ overreliance on generative artificial intelligence prevents them from developing the skills required for the future and becoming the talent demanded by companies? Could this mean that they might have no future because no one taught them when not to rely on AI and when they needed to do the work themselves?
The concerning issue is that, by providing answers, generative artificial intelligence can eliminate the critical thinking process itself—that is, the student’s ability to understand how solutions to challenges and problems are developed, which is fundamental to learning.
But there is still hope. The educational system and families play an important role in shaping new generations by teaching them that generative artificial intelligence plays an important part in their development but that, ultimately, it is only a tool, not an extension of themselves.
