The Lluta Wetland, an Ode to Biodiversity

Year 2 | Issue 10 | October  2026 | Anglo-Saxon®

By Rodrigo Rojos Gardilcic – Chile

An ode grammatically represents an expression of deep admiration, often used to recognize the importance, value, and beauty that poetry can reflect, structured in paragraphs, it is capable of exalting in the same work both the harmony of the whole and the greatness of the details that compose it, recognizing that each element contributes to the majesty of the work.

A wetland is probably the most diverse and fragile setting in nature; they are mainly aquatic ecosystems and play an important role at the territorial level, since, in desert areas, such as the Arica and Parinacota Region, they are an important source of water resources, as well as barriers that prevent desertification, thus becoming the perfect setting for the development and preservation of life among the different species that coexist.

Located 10 kilometers north of the center of the city of Arica, the wetland at the mouth of the Lluta River was declared a Nature Sanctuary through Decree No. 106 of 2009 by the Ministry of Education. Its importance as a coastal wetland stands out because it is home to up to 130 species of birds in Chile, representing around 30% of the birds described in the country and making it the second wetland with the greatest diversity of birds after the Maipo River wetland, which is located in the central part of the country; if we are interested in migratory birds, we can find 40% of these birds that travel through Chile, which is why, in an area classified as extremely arid, the value of this wetland is further enhanced; its hectares of grasses, pastures, and shrubs are among the few places in the region where native vegetation can be found and so close to the city. For this reason, the Ministry of the Environment recognizes the fragility of this wetland, which is included in the Red Book of Priority Sites for the Conservation of Biological Diversity in Chile, a document that recognizes and delineates critical geographical areas to protect the flora, fauna, and threatened ecosystems of the country.

The good climate of the region is an invitation to visit the Lluta wetland permanently and in a responsible, respectful, and informed manner at different times of the year, not only for bird, plant, flower, and insect watching, but also to enjoy a landscape that contrasts with the desert, which changes with the increase in the flow of the Lluta River during each summer period, because these ecosystems are increasingly threatened, protected, and valued globally; they are unique places to treasure as memories and experiences.

Just as poetry connects with people through reading, the wetland invites us to connect through contemplation, through attentive, unhurried, peaceful, and pleasurable observation of nature, the desert, the river, and the sea, which speaks to us through the breaking of the waves and the sea breeze. This ode is written in paragraphs by the fish jumping, by the singing of the birds when they open their wings to bask in the sun or fly in flocks, by the insects that perch on the flowers or the spiders that weave their webs among shrubs, because they are the ones who offer us an ineffable experience with each visit.

Before going, plan your visit, always bring water, accompanied by personal protective equipment such as a hat, sunglasses, and appropriate clothing to protect yourself from the weather, do not leave trash and minimize the traces of your visit, since it is a free activity that allows bird watching at any time and is an excellent activity both personally and for families. The hours of the day generate different scenarios that allow bird watching at any time and on any day.
